Satoyama Jujo

A marriage of traditional Yukiguni culture and modern design

As the name suggests this is a ryokan that is deep in the satoyama or rural landscape. A thick-beamed, traditional, Yukiguni dwelling has undergone a modern reform, and is now equipped with energy efficient insulation. A healthy diet that relies heavily on the traditions and culture of Snow Country is served, full of organic, pesticide-free vegetables sourced as locally as possible. Time-tested methods of preparations such as storage under snow and fermentation also add their contribution to the menu.

Surrounding
Environment
& Location

Satoyama Jujo takes part of its name from its location in the mountainous countryside as it sits on a steep ridge in Minami Uonuma in Niigata prefecture at Osawa Onsen. The views are fantastic but it is not just the scenery that changes, but also the backdrop of sounds that reach your ears: the flowing of meandering streams, small creatures nearby, or the wind rustling the trees. These too change depending on the season.

Environmental
Conservation

There are a range of daily activities that you can join at Satoyama Jujo, for example a nature-themed walking tour of the grounds. Each room is also equipped with a walking map that shows suggested photo spots as well as information on flora and fauna so that guests can enjoy an unguided walk too. The refrigerators in the rooms are equipped with delicious water which comes from a spring on Mount Osawa and is a product of the weather and nature of Yukiguni, so after a walk it is the perfect way to quench your thirst.
Over fifty percent of the amenities provided are environmentally friendly. The toothbrush is very unusual and 100% made from natural materials as it is horsehair and bamboo. The soap is manufactured from onsen water and rice bran so contains no detergent. Also to avoid needless disposal of amenities, guests are encouraged to take them home with them to keep using them there.
As Satoyama Jujo is located in Yukiguni and is concerned with the environment it is very well insulated to reduce energy consumption as much as possible.

Local Community
& Culture

At Satoyama Jujo you can enjoy healthy meals that are strongly influenced by the terroir and culture of Niigata. Wherever possible vegetables traditional to the area are used so that people become aware of their existence. Vegetables are sourced from producers as close to the ryokan as possible and are organic and pesticide-free. Over fifty percent of the ingredients are obtained from within twenty five kilometers of the establishment. Furthermore, over eighty percent of the dishes provided over the course of the year are local cuisine that employ traditional forms of preparation and preservation methods. Depending on the season it is possible to visit the Yukimuro which is form of natural refrigeration that uses snow, or the Fermentation Room where different ingredients are being fermented or pickled.
The reception building at Satoyama Jujo is an old dwelling with over 150 years of history, and is constructed from highly-prized zelkova wood that has been painted in lacquer. The thick beams and pillars were essential in this area to give these old buildings enough strength to withstand the weight of the heavy snow.
