Modern design that incorporates harmony with the local nature and region

This accommodation seamlessly blends traditional Japanese architecture with modern design. Located at the base of Mount Tanigawa, it blends into the natural environment that surrounds it. For actively promoting environmental measures they have been awarded the Green Key. Monthly targets for waste are in place and reduce the amount of food waste. This is a ryokan that places great importance with its coexistence with nature and the local region.

Surrounding
Environment
& Location

It is located at the foot of Mount Tanigawa which is one of the famous Hundred Peaks of Japan. Senjuan was built on unused land on the banks of the Tanigawa and is designed to follow the shape of that river. It was planned to take advantage of the terrain while doing as little damage to nature as possible, so trees were left uncut among other measures. All the guest rooms have a view of Mount Tanigawa, and another highlight is the sight of the garden through the tall, curved glass of the corridor which give it a wonderful sense of openness.

Environmental
Conservation

The staff at Senjuan work alongside the locals to maintain and restore the hiking trail up Mount Tanigawa. This helps maintain the environment as well as strengthening the connection between the accommodation and the local people.
Senjuan has been awarded the internationally recognised Green Key which acknowledges establishments that are committed to sustainable business practices. Efforts aimed at reducing their impact on the environment include reduction of energy and water use, avoiding the use of designated harmful chemicals, and an LED usage rate of over seventy five percent. Monthly targets are in place to help reduce the amount of food waste. In addition the use of ingredients is fully maximized so it is not only the parts that are served to guests that are used, but other parts that are incorporated in stock for example. Efforts are being made to raise awareness for the reduction of energy and water consumption for guests as well. Senjuan places great importance in protecting and coexisting with the special nature that is unique to this area.

Local Community
& Culture

The menu prioritises ingredients from the locales of Gunma prefecture especially Joshu beef, char, and vegetables. For breakfast it is possible to choose your preference for the Japanese or Western options. For food purchasing, construction, and utilities such as electricity, gas, and water, over 80% of suppliers are sourced locally. In the event of a disaster the facility is prepared to be opened as an emergency shelter for guests as well as local residents. It is through measures like this, as well as showcasing local producers and providing work for locals that we are positively contributing to the local community.
The building itself boasts some local characteristics, and has been designed to blend in with the local scenery and its nature. One of its main charms is the fusion of traditional Japanese building techniques with a modern design aesthetic, and even the Kyoto-style clay walls within the facility have been crafted with a local Gunma soil.
