HATAGO Isen

The Gateway to Yukiguni

You can find this ryokan as soon as you get off the bullet train, nevertheless you can really get a feel for Yukiguni here, and there are many nature and culture activities to enjoy. The cuisine comes highly recommended as the preserved foods and seasonings are based on the traditional food culture of the Yukiguni region.

Surrounding
Environment
& Location

This accommodation is located right outside the West Exit of Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The onsen at HATAGO Isen comes from Echigo Yuzawa Onsen which has a history of over 800 years. HATAGO Isen sits at the very entrance of the Yukiguni region, and just a short thirty minute drive from here you can reach its sister establishment called 'ryugon' which is a boutique manor house hotel with a distinctive Yukiguni style.

Environmental
Conservation

In Yukiguni there is an abundance of crystal clear water that is a product of the rich nature and deep snow. HATAGO Isen is proud of this natural resource and provides this water to their guests in each room, as well as letting them know that this is the same water that can be drunk from the taps.
The water from Yuzawa Onsen is comparatively warm so HATAGO Isen also uses the water to help clear the winter snows.
It is also possible for guests at the ryokan to take part in day trip activities to the sister ryokan, 'ryugon'. There are nature experience tours available there such as an hour long hike up Mount Sakado, foraging for mushrooms, or gathering wild plants out in the mountains. There are also ways to enjoy the rural scenery such as taking a bicycle tour out into the countryside, or having a delicious lunch served out in one of the rice fields. A wide range of food and culture-related programs are also offered. The tours that involve heading out into the mountains play an important part in maintaining the boundaries between animals and humans, so help with preserving the natural balance in the countryside.

Local Community
& Culture

The Murangozzo Restaurant on the second floor of HATAGO Isen specializes in the traditional flavors of the region that have been passed down through the generations, and is full of ingredients that are typical in Yukiguni, as well as incorporating ways of preserving that helped keep food through the long, cold winters. Most ingredients are sourced locally, and more than fifty percent come from within a twenty five kilometer radius. There are also some gastronomy-themed tours available. You can tour the working kitchen and learn about the different aspects of Yukiguni wisdom and culture that are in use in the menu, or head out into the local mountains with a guide to gather wild ingredients and prepare them back in the ryokan alongside the chef. On the first floor there is a cafe and a gift shop. In the cafe you can enjoy a coffee brewed with water from the onsen source, or savor the special pudding that has been steamed in the onsen waters. The gift shop sells carefully selected local brands as well as ingredients that the ryokan itself is using.
With regards to community engagement eighty percent of businesses that the ryokan deals with are locally owned, and all of its staff come from the Yukiguni Tourism Zone. The management play an active part in the local organizations related to communicating the cultures and value of Yukiguni, so are positively contributing to the promotion of the region.
